The Ivy Hotel- Adults Only
We selected The Ivy for its pool deck: fully rebuilt in a recent renovation and...
Condado Ocean Club opened its doors in March 2018 under a different name, Serafina Beach Hotel, and under unusual circumstances: it was the first hotel to open in San Juan after Hurricane Maria, a ninety-six-room statement that the island was ready to receive guests again. Nothing about the project was modest: it opened as a statement, both architectural and civic. The project came from an unlikely pairing, the New York restaurateurs behind the Serafina Restaurant Group taking on their first hotel, backed by outside investment and designed by the New York firm ICrave. The brief was explicit: nothing colonial, nothing pastiche, a building that reads as contemporary as the ocean it faces. Waves reach the ground floor at high tide, which is why planters stand in for windows there rather than glass.
We chose Condado Ocean Club because it delivers on a promise most beachfront hotels only gesture at: the sea stays visible from almost every angle, inside and out. Recessed window sills keep sightlines uninterrupted in the rooms, and the public spaces, built around a fifty-foot infinity pool, keep the water in frame at every turn. Local art anchors the design rather than decorating around it, with a lobby mural by Sofia Maldonado and custom surfboards by the artist Charlie Ramirez at the bar. Two hundred and sixty-eight reviews average 8.7 out of 10, consistent with a hotel that has kept its design intact since 2018 rather than diluting it over time.
The hotel sits on Ashford Avenue in Condado, the strip of beachfront a few minutes from Old San Juan that has become the city's second hub for restaurants, boutiques and nightlife. It trades the colonial density of the old town for direct beach access and a wider, more modern stretch of the city, useful for travellers who want San Juan's energy without climbing cobblestones to reach it. Parking and taxis are easier here than in the old town's narrow one-way streets, a practical advantage for anyone renting a car for the rest of the island. The old town's forts and plazas remain a short taxi ride away for anyone who wants both registers in the same trip.

ICrave's brief was to avoid San Juan's colonial clichés entirely, and the result reads more like a design hotel on a Mediterranean coast than a Caribbean resort: teal and sea-green tones, white furniture, turquoise tiles, mirrored surfaces that bounce the light back toward the water. The rooms stay deliberately minimal, with recessed window sills instead of heavy frames and showers only half-enclosed in glass, choices that keep the ocean the focal point rather than competing with it. Sofia Maldonado's lobby mural and Charlie Ramirez's surfboards at PiñaCo, the lobby bar, are the only loud notes in an otherwise restrained palette.
aMare, the hotel's seafood restaurant, seats more than a hundred across a dining room that opens to both the street and the ocean, with a menu built around dishes like truffle risotto and Mediterranean-style branzino. Outside, a fifty-foot infinity pool faces the restaurant's terrace, and Saturdays bring a DJ to the pool deck for an afternoon that turns into early evening. The hotel also runs on an in-house generator, a detail that matters less for ordinary stays than for what it says about a property built, from its first season, to keep operating when the island's grid does not.
